Latvia's Golden Visa Changes on January 1, 2027
Updated October 2026.
Latvia's Parliament approved changes to its Golden Visa on June 11, 2026. They take effect on January 1, 2027. The real estate and government securities and bank deposit routes will be removed. Only the business investment route stays.
What the business route needs You invest โฌ50,000 in a Latvian company. That company must pay at least โฌ40,000 in tax each year. Today the route gives a 5-year residence permit. From January 1, 2027 the permit shortens to 2 years.
Permanent residence is still possible after 5 years of residence. Citizenship can follow after a further 5 years.
Latvia has a startup option too The Latvia Startup Visa has no minimum investment. Applicants show proof of funds of about โฌ5,160. A team of up to five co-founders can apply together. The permit is renewable each year for up to three years. It suits innovative and scalable startups better than the investment route.
Planning around the date If you are considering the current route then timing matters. The terms in force on your filing date decide which rules apply to you. Confirm the transition rules with Latvia's Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs before you commit funds.
